First of all, although sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) is related to the herb that is the main ingredient in absenthe, that green-colored liquor that’s popular in Europe, it is not the same thing. The active ingredient that makes sweet wormwood (known as sweet annie, sweet sagewort, annual mugwort or annual wormwood in North American) such a cancer-healer is artemisinin. Chinese medicine practitioners and others have used it for thousands of years to treat everything from inhibiting parasite growth to immune boosting.

Sweet wormwood is also chock-full of powerful, cancer-killing terpenes such as limonene and B-pinene and the flavonoid quercetin, all of which contain anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting, and anti-cancer properties. In addition, sweet wormwood contains the flavonoids luteolin and patuletin, sesquiterpenes such as camphor and myrcene and palmitic acid, a good source of saturated fat and promoter of enzyme health.

International studies have sadly found that the carpet-bombing approach that typical chemotherapy employs accounts for only 2% of the 5-year survival rates overall, researchers at the University of Washington have discovered that a special super-concentrated compound of sweet wormwood and iron can be over a thousand times more effective than chemo at targeting cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. The compound appears to especially be effective in combating breast cancer.

Developed by bioengineering professor Henry Lai, PhD, wormwood and iron together is said to act as a “trojan horse,” creating a literal “time bomb” for cancer cells. The compound is founded on the fact that cancer cells are not as successful as healthy cells in disposing of free-floating iron molecules. This weakness causes the presence of iron in general to create a stressful environment for them. Lai and his team used naturally-occur holotransferrin, which carries iron into cells, as a way to transfer high doses of artemisinin into breast and prostate cancer cells.


Artemisia Annua (Sweet Wormwood) contains artemisinin, which inactivates the malarial parasites, but it does not kill them. Therefore, drug resistance with artemisinin is common when it is used alone. In combination with other herbs or modern anti-malarial medicines, it is effective for the management of malaria.

Artemisia Annua also contains several other chemical constituents, which are cytotoxic to cancer cells. Now, it is studied for the treatment of cancer. It has anti-cancer, anti-proliferative and anti-mutagenic characteristics.
